
A man getting raped in prison has been treated as comedy. A typical element of such jokes is the risk of a man bending over to pick something up, such as soap. 7-Up used this motif in a jesting advertisement run about the year 2002.^ In 2001, the Attorney General of California suggested at a press conference that he would like personally to place former Enron Chairman Kenneth Lay in a prison cell where he would be prone to getting raped.^ In 2009, the report of the U.S. National Prison Rape Elimination Commission noted, “Many still consider sexual abuse an expected consequence of incarceration, part of the penalty and the basis for jokes….”^
